ENGLISH EDITION - The art seen from Fashion. Rose DeVauville, the art of Collage
The world of art according to the point of view of Fashion is a captivating
experience, and hearing this told by a woman who has lived at the creative core
of the French Haute is really a unique perspective.
Rose De Vauville, stage name of Daniel Paturel, is an artist who has worked along with
the greatest French Maison: she has collaborated with Ungaro, Balmain
accessories, Guerlain accessories and for 15 years she has been
following the production of the creative ideas that were the basis of the
creations of John Galliano and Dior.
Rose De Vauville, il nome d’arte di Daniel Paturel, è
un’artista che ha lavorato con le più grandi Maison Francesi: ha collaborato
con Ungaro, agli accessori Balmain, agli accessori Guerlain e, per 15
anni, ha seguito la produzione creativa delle idee che sono state la base delle
creazioni di John Galliano e Dior.
In questa intervista Rose DeVauville si racconta e mostra la
sua passione per un lavoro che va oltre
il lavoro. Un vita spesa nella ricerca incessante tra arte materiale e
immateriale, tra emozioni, idee, e
ispirazioni, che si sono sintetizzate nelle sue opere d’arte del Collage.
ENGLISH EDITION - Laces, feathers, pearls, gloves and photographs merge themselves into a visual image which transforms, thanks to her manual
skill, the most modern side of a creative job that goes beyond the
communicative barriers and comes into the public eye as universal language.
We met at 2174 meters high, on top of the world, where we talked about her job during the St. Moritz Art Masters 2015 event.
In a room decorated with chandeliers filled with candles and cherubs,
pearls and accessories used by the artist in her compositions; on the walls
there were her creations that impressed me for their elegance and beauty.

In una sala addobbata con lampadari pieni di candele e puttini, perle e
accessori utilizzati dall’artista nelle sue composizioni, tra le pareti le sue creazioni che mi hanno colpito eleganza e bellezza.

speak French? Yes, well…. Because… Finally my job is very “French”. I have been
working in fashion a lot, that’s true… For 15 years with Dior and with John
Galliano. France of the ’30, ’40 and ’50 is my inspiration; here there was the
real “Glamour”, in the expression of Black and White, in the elegance of France…
I hope that it will come to pay tribute to the work of my work ..., indeed that
is the idea. ENGLISH EDITION - Audrey - why the Collage technique?
Rose Devauville - We have
always worked a lot on some researches about these periods that were the
favourite periods. When I made these researches I have worked on the “Books of
Ideas” and I started making some Collages. Then I went on. So I really wanted
doing my work about the history of “Collage” because in the end it is the
expression of the matter that I have worked in Fashion and at the same time in
photography which is something that I immensely love.
ITALIAN EDITION - Audrey - perche la tecnica del Collage?
Rose Devauville - Abbiamo lavorato sempre molto sulle ricerche di questi periodi che sono stati i periodi favoriti, quando ho fatto le ricerche ho lavorato ai "Libri delle Idee" e ho cominciato a fare dei Collage delle idee e poi ho continuato e dopo ho veramente voluto fare il mio lavoro sulla storia del "Collage" perchè è l'espressione, alla fine, della materia che ho lavorato nella Moda e nello stesso tempo della Foto che è qualcosa che io amo enormemente.
Rose Devauville - In fact
there are many artists who inspired me and who have never made some Collage but
have made Black and White photographs with some universes around and some
objects or things that recounted some stories about photography and my idea was
at the same time to re-work the matter, because matter was Fashion of that
time. I found in Dior some incredible things like artisans who still make
feathers, flowers, furs an my idea is to connect what I love, that is Black and
White photography and Matter.
When you ask me who are the artists that inspired me, among the periods I
love, there are some incredibles. There are photographs and designers who don’t
belong to the first years of Fashion and they are Marlene Vionnet and Coco
Chanel.
Marlene Vionnet was the first one to cut material on the bias, that is to say she realized some dresses in which the fabric starts in this way (diagonally) which has inspired John Galliano a lot. This is a technical work. So fashion like photography: it is an incredible source of inspiration as well as materials… and when I move to shops searching for my materials, as I work very much to find old materials, well that is an incredible research, because little by little those materials finish and stop existing because nobody nowadays make feathers or flowers anymore.
ITALIAN EDITION - Audrey - quali sono le idee o, se ci sono, chi sono gli artisti che ti ispirano?
Rose Devauville - Infatti ci sono tantissimi artisti che mi
hanno ispirato che non hanno fatto del Collage,
ma che hanno fatto foto in Bianco e Nero con degli universi intorno e
degli oggetti e delle cose che hanno raccontato delle storie intorno alla
fotografia, e la mia idea è stata nello stesso tempo quella di “rilavorare” la
materia, perché la materia è stata la Moda dell’epoca, e ho trovato in Dior
delle cose incredibili, degli artigiani che fanno ancora le piume, i fiori,
delle pelliccie, e l’idea è quella di legare quello che amo, la fotografia in
Bianco e Nero e la Materia.
Quando tu mi domandi gli artisti per me fonte d’ispirazione,
nelle epoche che io amo, ce ne sono di incredibili, ci sono dei fotografi, ci
sono dei lavori, dei designer, che non sono delle prime epoche della moda, ma
sono Marlene Vionnet, Coco Chanel… Marlen Vionnet ha fatto il tessuto in
“sbieco” cioè ha fatto degli abiti in cui il tessuto parte così ( in diagonale
) che ha molto ispirato John Galliano, ecco.. è un lavoro tecnico. Quindi la
moda come la fotografia è una ispirazione incredibile e anche i materiali… e
quando vado nei negozi per cercare i miei materiali, perché io lavoro
moltissimo per cercare i materiali antichi, è una ricerca incredibile, perché
piano piano i materiali finiscono e non
esistono più, perche nessuno le fa ormai. Le piume, i fiori etc…ecco..

that you love the most?
Rose Devauville - Gli artisti che
mi piacciono, ce ne sono molti è difficile dire.. ci sono molti fotografi,
Henry Clarke che amo particolarmente, …Richard Avedon, è molto difficile
scegliere per me tutto è talmente meraviglioso…Adoro Maurizio Cattelan, perché
amo il suo spirito, il suo humor, e allos tesso tempo è vero che ha idee
interessanti, idee vere, e amo Robert Longo che è un grande photografo e
artista che fa delle foto che non sono delle foto, amo Erwin Olaf che è un
grande fotografo che amo enormemente per l’estetica delle sue foto, molti
artisti.
Gli artisti che amo sono anche storie di
vita interessanti evidentemente, non è solo il loro lavoro ma è anche la loro
vita, è la loro Epoca, la storia di tutto quello che hanno fatto. …. Durante la
Guerra, il 1914, poi gli anni Folli, e poi di nuovo la guerra, quindi
moltissime cose incredibilmente difficili e nello stesso tempo appasionanti. I love many artists and it is hard to say which one I love the most… among
them there are many photographers. Maybe, in particular, I love Henry Clarke….
or Richard Avedon, but it is very hard to choose one as for me everything is so
wonderful… I adore Maurizio Cattelan for his spirit, his humor and at the same
time he has very interesting ideas, true ideas,, and then I love Robert Longo
who is a great photographer and an artist at the same time who takes pictures
which are not pictures. I also love Erwin Olaf who is another great
photographer. I admire him for the aesthetic of his pictures… Definitely, I
love many many artists!
But the artists I love are
also a sort of interesting life stories of course; it is not only their work that
I love but also their lives, their Epoch, the story of everything they have
done… During the War, in 1914, then then in the crazy years, and then again
during the war, so many things incredibly difficult and yet exciting.ITALIAN EDITION - Audrey - quando arriva l’idea?
Rose Devauville - Anche se le idee sono certe idee di un’ Epoca bisogna
ricostruirle oggi, e l’idea quando arriva arriva velocemente, poi tecnicamente
è un po’ piu lunga perchè tutto viene fatto a mano e quindi è una tecnica di
Collage che è un po’ lunga.
Audrey - chi sono gli artisti che le piacciono?
Rose Devauville - Gli artisti che mi piacciono, ce ne sono
molti è difficile dire.. ci sono molti fotografi, Henry Clarke che amo
