Miami Art Basel 2019 - Surprise Me

ENGLISH EDITION - Surprise Me - Miami Art Basel 2019

The trip to Miami for Miami Art Basel 2019 was a moment of reflection on my perception of art and what for me is Art in the new millennium in which we are immersed. Strolling through the thousands of works on display in this spectacular Miami convention center space, you realize how, after thousands of years of man's life on earth, the rules of the universe apply deeply even in this seemingly "unreal" world. Creations that are the result of minds and thoughts "reconverted" into physical objects to be observed, the more or less conventional imaginations of many brains and their creativity, compose an Art Basel 2019 that more than an art fair, appears as the real place where dreams, nightmares, fascinations, deviations of human thought add up according to cosmic laws, apparently inscrutable around the black hole of the word Art.

Fluid, variable, uncontrollable, often built on inner pain or on one's own obsessions, art is similar to human thought or perhaps it is human thought in the purest sense of the term, without social and religious limits and obstacles, which is "rendered" in more or less multimedia physicality. If I had to think of a universal law that can tell the story of art from its origins to the present day, I would say that art is "surprise", the ability to capture the viewer through any form of representation, which sets the object or installation in a mental place in which we identify it as special, surprising, reflective, emotional and that still shakes a part of our soul.

Art then as a place of "non-indifference", as a place of surprise, of space, which for different reasons brings us closer to that artificial intelligence whose algorithms are slowly invading our lives. Art is the activation of an "on/off" of the "surprise" effect, a parameter of our brain of which, in a certain sense, we still do not fully understand the reasons. The digital world, which in the meantime has prepared us to observe and see all that our mind can be capable of achieving, will soon perhaps be able to understand what our brains think could become art. This is perhaps the secret I have captured in this Art Basel 2019 that will leave its mark on me: it has made me reflect on what, applied to everything I observe, makes me say whether what I see is art for me or not. Of course I am nobody to say and understand, but the only element I can perceive when I dwell on an artistic composition, whatever its expressive form, is perhaps only that "Surprise me".

Cajsa von Zeipel

I can put everything in it, and as also in this Miami Art Basel, from Abba's record labels, to the banana sticking to Cattelan's wall, to the more or less dreamy installations of young dreamy artists, those who have come to admire this mental world of the world's creatives transformed into objects to buy and sell, come home with a single and incredible surprise effect, in which everyone has been able to elaborate and imagine what they wanted. Among these, I also understand the reasons of gallery owners or so-called "art dealers" who, for better or for worse, feed the creative market with their economies and act as a fuse for a fire that would perhaps have no reason to exist without them. After all, they are the reason for this spectacular staging, in which they invest for a personal benefit but at the same time they allow you to enjoy all these works in a single container.

Miami Art Basel is a museum of the near future, a place of the "next past", a "non" museum that is the becoming of our time. Just as the stars, in our solar system, attract and repel each other with parabolic trajectories managed by the force of gravity, the artists of Miami Art Basel vibrate in a dissonant way, in a universe where Miami is the real black hole on which to capture with the electromagnetic force of imagination. Big and small artists, who like stardust aggregate in side events connected to the Art Week, compile this incredible "surprise me" that is probably the key to the whole and that will probably soon be replaced by creative, self-thinking machines that will build the new art forms of the future.

And then, what’s going to matter most? The artist’s idea or the algorithm of a software capable of thinking by replicating our imagination? Who will decide what is art? A statistic, some art critics, or a social click? And how are we going to check if that art we see is real or not-human? If the author is a machine or a thought of a madman, or a true creative? I don't have the answers and I don't want to find them and so, as art is born from a mystery that is our mind and materializes in something physical and transitory, I think that the "Surprise Me" is perhaps the only rational element that justifies its presence. Through art we are able to go beyond ourselves and project ourselves into a virtual space that in the future will merge with the digital one, and perhaps only then will we return to excite ourselves by returning to a cave, by the light of a flame, drawing on the rock with a piece of coal. From the caves in the mountains of Kalimantan, Borneo, the prehistoric art galleries with their drawings from 40 thousand years ago show that man needs art and art lives with it.

See you next year

Ci vediamo L’anno prossimo

Monte Carlo Gala for The Global Ocean 2019 - World record of 26 Million for the Global Ocean Protection

The Prince's embrace with Milutin Gatsby - Global Fundraising Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation

Montecarlo Gala for The Global Ocean 2019
is one of its priorities, and its awareness is growing and around the world the protest of the new generations to act in this direction is rising, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation shines for its great foresight that sees it as the undisputed leader of the protection of the oceans. The magnificent evening Montecarlo Gala for The Global Ocean 2019 in which the lightness of the event was celebrated in the depths of a magnificent icy sea bed, developed into a marathon of solidarity that this year reached the record of 26 million euros collected in a single night.

Guests of Monte Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean 2019
The magnificent goal achieved by Prince Albert II of Monaco with his foundation is memorable, and behind this feat there is always the unwearying work that Milutin Gatsby, the fundraiser of the foundation, has managed to achieve, a result that can hardly be equalled on a planetary level in a single night. If the imposing celebratory machine succeeds in obtaining these results, then these events, that can bring the consciousness of mankind to an even higher level and respectful of the place where we share our existence with all living beings, are really welcome.
The incredible  Gala location
An evening worthy of being told, because even if its ritual is always repeated in a similar way, with the red carpet, the cocktail among the works of art and the jewels for the auction, the gala dinner, the stars, the millionaire auctions, and the rivers of champagne (I prefer "Rosé" Perrier Jouet), the red carpet is always a great emotion, a great dive into the sea of photographers waiting for you on the "blue carpet" as if only you were the queen of that moment.

And a sea of images flows in my mind, as I find myself thinking about those hours spent freediving between a sea of sequins, tuxedos, smiles, jewelry, and beautiful women who compete to be more beautiful in front to any smartphone or camera intercepting their looks. It 's an amazing feeling to see beauty at the service of humanity that from all over the world is found here, in front of a Prince of other times, to celebrate something memorable that will remain in my heart.

And I'm not just talking about the stars and celebrities that have followed one another in the gala - from Nicole Kidman and Uma Thurman to Gwen Stefani, Andrea Bocelli and Kool & The Gang - but I'm referring also to the magical atmosphere built around an hypothetical world of ice in which guests found themselves, through an underwater path dug into tunnels of ice, leading to the beautiful transparent room of the gala. All around, raising their eyes to the sky, huge blocks of melting ice, even the tables of the dinner had blocks of ice in the middle, and in the center of the room, stood out in its imposing decadent image of its melting, the power of a melting ice candlestick to symbolize the seriousness of the moment we are living in the Planet. A beautiful scenographic choice, worthy of a set of a Hollywood movie, built to make live from within and to deeply understand what the world is experiencing with the melting of the ice, and at the same time a nice way to make people reflect on what we could do to avoid it.
Audrey on the submarine tunnel to the gala
When the first glass of Champagne began to take effect and the evening took off, the first auctions started, including the one for the Arctic expedition with Prince Albert, which perhaps more than any other I would have liked to win, and a sequence of exceptional pieces such as the electric motorcycle, the royal dinner at the palace of Versailles, iconic cars, jewels, works of art, and weeks on luxurious super yachts and in dreamy residences. An incredible burst of red lights flashing inside the large hall, indicating the rises on each offer, at the end of the evening decreed the record of 26 million euros that was reached this year, thus collecting another record for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and for its fundraiser Milutin Gatsby.

The Prince's embrace with him on stage is emblematic of the affection they both place in each other's work and the sign of deep gratitude and mutual friendship, reminding me of the final scene in the movie with Tom Cruise "Jerry Maguire" in which there is the final embrace between Cuba Gooding Jr. and Cruise, that in a single moment tells everything that words cannot say and that means poetry and values in which to believe. I was surprised by the performance of Gwen Stefani who on stage turned out to be a woman full of power and exceptional energy, I was so close to her that I could see in her eyes the strength of a woman who offered herself with her band and her body of dance with a power that I have seen a very few times on stage.

Gwen Stefani on stage of Monte Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean
The moment when the Prince presented an award to the great actor, director and philanthropist Robert Redford, who on stage spent the value of his voice on the cause of the oceans, was a great emotion, and seeing that icon of the cinema there, in front of me, talking about the future of humanity and the protection of nature, while the images of his immense career were flowing on the screens, was for me very touching. In the end, I can say that I am lucky because I was able to meet both the great Gatsby who made the history of cinema and of real life. Robert Redford was the first actor to make the character of Scott Fitzgerald's book famous, just as Di Caprio did for the new generations, and to be able to see him together with the other Gatsby, MIlutin, who in real life, is helping with his commitment so many philanthropic works, made me think that behind the character of Fitzgerald there is a magical aura that strikes those in one way or another, and brings with it a value that makes both unique in their kind.

Robert Redford on stage - "this maybe is our last chanche to save the planet"

Milutin Gatsby is not only the fundraiser of Prince Albert of Monaco's Foundation, but also of other Foundations, such as those of  Amfar, Madonna and DiCaprio; and perhaps the moment when Gatsby's cufflinks were auctioned, just the ones of Di Caprio's movie, is emblematic. While the images of the presentation of the bids were running, I could not help but think that thanks to Milutin Gatsby, the Great Gatsby by DiCaprio and Redford were able to join together at the service of the Albert of Monaco Foundation. I can say that I have seen all three of them united for this mission, and sincerely I have something great to carry in my basket of good memories. I had the honor to attend the most beautiful show in the world for the preservation of the oceans, and I experienced the most emblematic moment of this year, and this is a gift that, as a well known advertisement says, "is priceless".

Nicole Kidman on stage

As well as Robin Thicke's performance at the end of the evening, in the after party at the Monte Carlo Casino, in which Robin led all the guests to the end, making them dance to the rhythm of the legendary songs that made him famous. When the heels of my YSLs asked me to stop, I decided to listen, and so, together with them, while I was crossing the square of the Casino lit up by the lights of the evening, I walked in my gown in the streets of the garden near to the Buddha Bar to return to my suite at the Fairmont. I could not help but admire the spectacular scenery that stood before me, in the darkness of the night. Like big whales resting on the water, the lights of super yachts, made me think about the magic of this world that we are compromising, and being able to think that even a party can do something for this mission, makes me go to bed happy to have been there...

Uma Thurman on stage
Then, Monte Carlo is just magical and its nocturnal, inexplicable charm has always given me moments of happiness. A dreamy night, unforgettable, too short to be lived.!!!

Montecarlo Gala for The Global Ocean 2019

Angels Above Milan Fashion Week SS 2020

Giorgio Armani fashion show SS 2020

ENGLISH EDITION - Milan Fashion Week ss 2020 tells the story of a junction between past and future in which new media have transformed the fashion week into a unique and fascinating set, in which Milan has become a film set of unimaginable size. Just as life is made up of sublime moments and theatrical ones, so fashion, with the power of social media, has reached a visual panorama in which it is difficult to follow a path. Just as in the sand it is impossible to see one's footsteps in the middle of a storm, so it becomes difficult to tell the story of a world that, in order to show itself and capture the attention, is playing it all out.

Giorgio Armani fashion show SS 2020
It is then explained why the Circus of the historical families, of the Togni or the Barnum, has disappeared. In fact, there is no longer any need for it, because the desire to marvel has disappeared, because the clown or conjurer has been surpassed by those who, inside and outside the Dolce & Gabbana or Moschino or Gucci shows, are celebrated every year.

Giorgio Armani fashion show SS 2020
The "sick world of fashion" that Gucci has been taking to the runway for years, from the operating room to the world of straitjackets, has self-improved in this collective madness experienced in the streets of Milan, where you can no longer distinguish the puppet from the doll, the style from courage. It is as if thousands of pages of fashion, detached from the force of the wind, have come to life freeing themselves from newspapers and social networks, to become alive in the streets of Milan, which, despite everything, seems once again to take in its hands the fate of world fashion.

Giorgio Armani fashion show SS 2020
A joyful chaos that filled the streets, in whose sky I saw angels flying. Giorgio Armani in his purity was able to show that angels exist and his ability to elaborate the concept of woman and beauty, makes him the Leonardo da Vinci of this world, so vulnerable to the power of the ugliness.

Audrey with Giorgio Armani and Maia Guarnaccia Ceo of Peter Pilotto
The lightness of the beauty of a great master of fashion can still give moments of great magic that soothe the mind. Modern angels, completely different, those told by Peter Pilotto, the English brand of the duo Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, who paraded for the first time in Milan, after 12 years of catwalks in London. It took the intuition and courage of Maia Guarnaccia, the CEO of the English brand, to bring the brand into this new dimension in which the Italian origin of the designer Peter Pilotto showed how Milan is still the place of the beating heart of fashion paradise.

Peter Pilotto fasione show SS 2020
Maia Guarnaccia strongly wanted their presence in Italy, and Peter Pilotto's duo brought an international, clean and light freshness of an Anglo-Saxon world that we Italians have always tried to imitate, in music as well as in entertainment in general, whether we like it or not. A great test of courage and creativity that has seen the Pilotto woman show along with the typical elements of digital printing that has always characterized the modernity of this brand, declined this time also in its male part, which in line with the new modern feeling, can be experienced in a creative way together with an innovative knitwear that marks together with the bags the new evolutionary step of a brand that we will hear about.
Peter Pilotto fasione show SS 2020

It is no coincidence that among the stars and celebrities (who love it) there are calibers like Rhianna and the English royal family, and it is no coincidence that the Manzoni theater, temple of Italian theater culture, have welcomed it with a show worthy of those who will make history. And if these English have reversed Brexit, coming to confront themselves with Italian fashion, it means that on the one hand they understand our ability to develop the costume and on the other they want to come and win here in Italy to be truly global.
Peter Pilotto with Audrey and her friend Tena
And certainly their fashion show was a moment of joy in which I saw again the joie de vivre that smiles together with colors and the compositions of a young couple like Dolce and Gabbana of the near future, mixed with the grace and beauty of the first generation Missoni, who founded that Milan of fashion in the 80s. In short, for me this is a confirmation after I had admired their fashion show in London last year, that I had appreciated for the "London" freshness of a way of seeing fashion that was different from stereotypes.

And of course I can't help but underline the beauty of Elisabetta Franchi's collection, which perhaps represents the best side of this digital evolution of fashion in which she herself, with her desire as a woman who lives in fashion, manages to capture around her the true popularity of a market full of women who, in spite of everything, want to live and show their femininity just like their mothers and grandmothers who dreamed of dressing like Marylin or Sophia Loren.
Elisabetta Franchi Show SS2020
Elisabetta Franchi is in Italian fashion the only true interpreter of our lifestyle, understood as a feminine ideal that loves to be admired in a perfect Italian style. The beautiful fashion show in "Yatch" Style, literally exploded into an unparalleled composition of garments from a collection that will sell like never before because it was born simply from the desires of a woman who understands the desires of women.
Elisabetta Franchi Show SS2020
And in the same way, with the same logic, the incomparable event of Pink Plein, showed the other contemporary way of satisfying those needs and that desire to laugh and play and live the life that only one like Plein knows how to do. He is the man who embodies his brand and his mentality in making fashion, although it was snubbed at the beginning of his career by the great players of the fashion world, today is redefining the new narrative path of fashion, to which all have bowed. His Pink event, in his boutique in pink, full of pink, plush and candyfloss and characters from an unlikely Disney theme park, awaken the desire for real life, made of physical play, fun and irony, that the digital world has transferred elsewhere.
The Plein Pink Party
The Plein Pink Party
So, I wanted to tell you about my Angels of this fashion week: Giorgio Armani, Peter Pilotto, Elisabetta Franchi, and last but not least Philipp Plein who will remain all in my heart, from this memorable Fashion Week in which I have seen many demons, trying to kill beauty and style.
