STEVE MCCURRY’S WORLD – A DIVE INTO THE SEA OF LIFE

Whenever it happens, and luckily this happens often, to me it is like a rebirth: a dive into the sea of life, beyond its usual dimension.

Despite they are very far from my world made of bright lights, full of glamorous reflections, Steve’s images help me to come back to Earth showing up, when I least expect it, the truth of life, making me reflecting and rearranging my world  by placing in its proper perspective "humanity", that I feel I can easily lose along the fragility of my existence.

IL MONDO DI STEVE MCCURRY –  UN TUFFO NEL MARE DELLA VITA

Ogni volta che accade, e questo per fortuna accade spesso, per me è come una rinascita: un tuffo nel un mare della vita oltre la sua normale dimensione.

Nonostante sia molto lontano dal mio mondo fatto di luci brillanti, piene di riflessi glamour, le immagini di Steve mi aiutano a ritornare sulla terra ripresentandomi, quando meno me lo aspetto, la verità della vita facendomi riflettere e riordinare il mio mondo riponendo, nella sua esatta prospettiva, “l´umanità” che sento di poter perdere facilmente percorrendo la fragilità della mia esistenza.

Every single Steve McCurry’s exhibition is similar to a concert where music is composed by faces and fragments of life, that I’ve never lived, but that are able to “speak” in the silence of a facial expression and of a simple glaze.

It is like if my body, in a moment, could lose all its cognitive capability turning into an aerial ables to receive just one cipher message, made of “frames” which penetrate the soul even before the brain has been able to process the deeper meaning.

 Ogni mostra di Steve McCurry è simile ad un concerto in cui la musica, si compone di volti e frammenti di vita che non ho mai vissuto, ma che sanno parlare, nel muto silenzio di una espressione e di un semplice sguardo.

E’ come se il mio corpo, in un attimo, riesca a perdere tutte le sue capacità cognitive trasformandosi in una antenna capace di ricevere un solo messaggio cifrato di “frames” che penetrano nell´anima prima ancora che il cervello abbia potuto elaborarne il significato più profondo.

I can’t explain it. I only know that my eyes, thanks to his images, are able to feel, amplifying them, life emotions in all their forms; from sufferings, joys, to all the nuances that make it something magical, wonderful and unique to live.

This last exhibition at the Reggia of Venaria in Tourin, curated by the talented Biba Giachetti who has been following for years Steve McCurry’s works, with a simple but very addictive scenography which is something more, something deeper that rips the from heart an emotion which endures forever, leaving an indelible mark in the consciousness.

Non so spiegare, so solo che i miei occhi, grazie alle sue immagini, riescono a sentire, amplificandole, le emozioni della vita in tutte le sue forme, dalle sofferenze, alle gioie, a tutte quelle sfumature che la rendono qualcosa di magico, meraviglioso e di unico da vivere.

Quest’ultima mostra della Reggia di Venaria a Torino, sotto la cura della bravissima Biba Giachetti che da anni segue i lavori di Steve McCurry, con una scenografia semplice ma molto coinvolgente, è qualcosa di più, qualcosa di più profondo, che strappa dal cuore un’emozione che rimane per sempre lasciandoti un’impronta indelebile nella coscienza.

270 photographs tells about world humanity that we can no longer see, trampled on by the tempest of images that surround us at any time of the day and the elegant setting up designed by Peter Bottazzi, among semi-transparent veils overlapping anywhere the look decides to linger, make this exhibition an example of creative virtuosity where colors and images seem to amplify the strength of the looks and eyes that are watching you from every direction.

270 fotografie raccontano l’umanità del mondo che non riusciamo più a vedere, calpestato come è dalla tempesta di immagini che ci circondano in ogni momento della giornata e, il raffinato allestimento curato da Peter Bottazzi, tra veli semitrasparenti che si sovrappongono ovunque lo sguardo decida di soffermarsi, fanno della mostra un esempio di virtuosismo creativo in cui, i colori e le immagini, sembrano amplificare la forza degli sguardi e degli occhi che ti osservano da ogni direzione.

The eyes…. Yes! Eyes that in this exhibition talk to you, look at you, judge you and thy do it simply by showing the prospect of who is watching you from the photographs, and they create a so personal and deep relationship with the observer who thinks to be, as when you were a child, in a church to watch the eyes of the statues which seem to watch you all the time.   

But the most disarming thing is that dispite poverty, despair, or the cruelty of many images it always shines through an idea of beauty that comes from Steve’s humanity, who managed to take, in any situation, the value that only great artists can see.

Gli occhi….. si gli occhi in questa mostra ti parlano, ti osservano, ti giudicano semplicemente facendoti vedere la prospettiva di chi ti sta osservando dalle fotografie, e creano un rapporto così personale e intimo con l’osservatore che pare di essere, come da bambini, in una chiesa a osservare gli occhi delle statue, che sembrano osservarti in continuazione.

La cosa più disarmante però è che nonostante la povertà, la disperazione, o la crudeltà di molte immagini, traspare sempre un’idea di bellezza che nasce dall’umanità di Steve che ha saputo cogliere in ogni situazione quel valore che solo i grandi artisti sanno vedere.

I don’t know if it is possible making a so bold comparison, but personally I think that his way of representing life, his portraits and moreover the deep gazes that he gave us have the magnitude of masterpieces such as the "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo da Vinci.

In my opinion, his greatness is in the fact that when you stop to look at his photographs, Steve succeeds in disappear, leaving us "unconscious" in front of a picture that makes us enter directly into that world that makes us emotionally reacting.

It is like if his job with the camera is only to open up a "door" that allows us to get into another place in which, the humanity that represents us, is able to tell us something that perhaps we forgot.

Non so se sia possibile fare un paragone così ardito, ma personalmente penso che il suo modo di rappresentare la vita, i suoi ritratti e soprattutto gli sguardi profondi che ci ha regalato, hanno la grandezza di capolavori come la “Gioconda” di Leonardo da Vinci.

La sua grandezza per me sta nel fatto che, nel momento in cui ti soffermi a guardare le sue fotografie, Steve riesce a scomparire, lasciandoci “incoscienti” davanti ad una immagine che ci fa entrare direttamente in quel mondo e ci fa reagire emotivamente.

E’ come se il suo lavoro, con la macchina fotografica, sia solo quello di aprirci una “porta” che ci permette di entrare in un altro luogo in cui, l’umanità che ci rappresenta, è in grado di raccontarci qualcosa che forse abbiamo dimenticato dentro di noi.

If you have the chance of being in Tourin, go and visit this incredible exhibition or, if you can, take a day trip day there on purpose because like a marvellous song it is able to touch the right cords of emotions. This spectacular exhibition will give you something you will not forget:
