ENGLISH EDITION - The Pirelli 2019 calendar is a dream started in 2015 when, sitting next to Albert Watson admiring the beautiful Venetian Lagoon in the splendid garden of Venissa - on the island of Mazzorbo - we talked about exactly of his dream of conceiving and realizing a Pirelli calendar.
I will never forget how the emotion of being in front of a "Maestro" conditioned me so much that I could not ask what I had imagined and how only after a few hours spent with him, the story of the "magic" that he pulled out of his heart, revealed the immense beauty of his images. It was a long conversation, in every possible direction, in which his history, poetry and talent showed me passions, desires, and dreams not yet achieved, including the "mystery" of never having realized aPIRELLI calendar.
It was at least curious that in his career Albert had never
made one, and just to my specific question about his "absence" from
such an important challenge, Watson confirmed to me this
"strangeness", pointing out that, in case they asked him, he would
certainly accept making something different than what he had done until then.
And so, 3 years later, we met on the night of Wednesday, December 5 in Milan, at the Hangar Bicocca, to see how that dream - the Dream - that we had caressed together in the distant 2015 in Venice, has become reality.
Pirelli The Cal 2019 - Dreaming - is a journey into the
dreams of women who live their time and who through some "still image"
of their lives show the very essence of their dreams. In the history of the Pirelli Calendar this is a
"conceptual – afore than photographic - return to the very essence of
Photography" in which the paradox of the photographer who has
"dreamed" of making his own Pirelli Calendar, through the dreams of
the women he photographs, tells the very dreams of his protagonists showing
their fragilities and desires, through a story of which Albert himself is the
scriptwriter and director.
"I would like people, looking at the Calendar, to understand
that my goal was to do pure photography, explore the women I was photographing
and create a situation that would propose a positive vision of today's
women," said Albert Watson, who in this work created a "long
photographic tale of the aspirations of four women and their commitment to
achieving their goals, each chasing dreams and passions."
Through the protagonists and their
"cinematographic" representation, Albert knows how to tell the dreams
and desires of millions of women engaged in their lives, who continue to "pursue
dreams and passions".
"Each of the four women - he continues - has an individuality on her own, her own specific purpose in life and her own way of doing things. And all of them are focused on their future. So, the underlying theme is 'dreams', but the idea behind the whole project is the tale through four 'little films'.”
So the loneliness of Gigi Hadid, who lives in a glass tower
and has Alexander Wang as his only friend and confidant; the passion for nature
and solitude of Julia Garner, who plays a young photographer; the dance for
Misty Copeland, who makes a living dancing in a club and who practices dancing
to become an étoile, with her boyfriend, played by Calvin Royal III"; or
the dream of success of Laetitia Casta, a painter who lives in a one-room
studio with her boyfriend, an artist and dancer played by Sergei Polunin, want
to tell four stories that give "a positive vision of women today."
"Forty colour and black and white shots in 16:9 format
inspired by Albert Watson's great passion for cinema" that radically shift
the attention from the characters to the stories themselves, making them
splendid and formidable actors in a much more elaborate project, which deeply
touches for its narrative effectiveness.
It's as if for once celebrities with their popularity have
lost something, to become interpreters of something bigger, in a magnificent
cinematographic representation where real aspects of their real daily life
emerge.
Albert took the stage at the Gala and began with this
sentence: "I am the photographer of this calendar, if you liked
the images I'm happy, if you didn't like the photos I apologize for having
taken them". These words alone show his greatness and his sensitivity
which make him one of the greatest Masters of modern culture.
We will need him again.

ITALIAN EDITION - Il calendario Pirelli 2019 è un sogno è iniziato nel 2015 quando, seduta vicino ad Albert Watson, nello splendido giardino di Venissa sull’isola di Mazzorbo, intenti ad ammirare la splendida Laguna Veneziana, abbiamo parlato giust’appunto del suo sogno di concepire e realizzare un calendario Pirelli. Non dimenticherò mai come l’emozione di essere dinanzi ad un “Maestro”, mi abbia condizionata a tal punto, da non riuscire a chiedere ciò che avevo immaginato e, come solo dopo poche ore passate con lui, il racconto della “magia” che ha tirato fuori dal suo cuore, ha svelato l’immensa bellezza dalle sue immagini.
E’ stata una lunga conversazione, in ogni direzione possibile,
in cui la sua storia, la poesia e il suo talento, mi hanno mostrato passioni, i
desideri, e sogni non ancora realizzati fra cui il “mistero”, di non aver mai
realizzato un calendario PIRELLI. Era perlomeno curioso che, nella sua carriera, Albert non
ne avesse mai realizzato uno, e proprio alla mia specifica domanda circa la sua
“assenza” da una sfida così importante, Watson mi aveva confermato la
“stranezza” evidenziando che, nel caso glielo avessero chiesto, lui avrebbe
certamente accettato, realizzando qualcosa di diverso rispetto a quanto fatto
fino ad allora.
E cosi, 3 anni dopo, ci siamo ritrovati nella notte di
mercoledì 5 dicembre a Milano, all’Hangar Bicocca, a vedere come quel sogno –
the Dream - che avevamo accarezzato
insieme nel lontano 2015 a Venezia, sia diventata realtà. Pirelli The Cal 2019 – Dreaming – è un viaggio nei sogni
di donne che vivono il loro tempo e che attraverso dei “fermo-immagine” della
loro vita mostrano l’essenza stessa dei loro sogni.
Nella storia del Calendario Pirelli questo è un ritorno “concettuale
- prima che fotografico - all’essenza
stessa della Fotografia” in cui il paradosso del fotografo che ha “sognato” di
realizzare un suo Calendario Pirelli, attraverso i sogni delle donne che
fotografa, racconta i sogni stessi delle sue protagoniste mostrandone le
fragilità ed i desideri, attraverso un racconto di cui Albert stesso è
sceneggiatore e regista. “Vorrei che le persone, guardando il Calendario,
capissero che il mio obiettivo era fare pura fotografia, esplorare le donne che
stavo fotografando e creare una situazione che proponesse una visione positiva
delle donne di oggi” ha raccontato Albert Watson che in quest’opera ha creato “Un
lungo racconto fotografico delle aspirazioni di quattro donne e del loro
impegno per raggiungere i propri obiettivi, ognuna a inseguire sogni e
passioni”.
Attraverso le protagoniste e la loro rappresentazione
“Cinematografica” Albert sa raccontare i sogni e i desideri di milioni di donne
impegnate nella propria vita, che continuano ad “inseguire sogni e passioni”.
E’ un modo certamente più sofisticato di vedere le Donne nella
loro seducente bellezza, di cui Albert Watson riesce a mostrare il lato più
positivo, e di cui sa cogliere anche una nudità naturale e quasi inconsistente,
che valorizza l’idea descrittiva dei sogni e dei desideri che esse stesse
vivono nella propria vita.
“Ciascuna delle quattro donne – prosegue - ha un’individualità a sé stante, un suo specifico scopo nella vita e un proprio modo di fare le cose. E tutte sono concentrate sul loro futuro. Quindi, il tema di fondo è quello dei ‘sogni’, ma l’idea alla base dell’intero progetto è il racconto attraverso quattro ‘piccoli film’”.
Così la solitudine di Gigi Hadid che vive in una torre di
vetro e ha in Alexander Wang l’unico amico e confidente; la passione per la
natura e per la solitudine di Julia Garner che interpreta una giovane
fotografa, la danza per Misty Copeland che si mantiene danzando in un locale e
che si esercita a ballare per diventare un’étoile, con il suo fidanzato,
interpretato, appunto, da Calvin Royal II; il sogno del successo di Laetitia
Casta, una pittrice che vive in un monolocale-studio con il suo compagno
artista ballerino, interpretato da Sergei Polunin, vogliono raccontare quattro storie che diano “ una visione
positiva delle donne di oggi”.
“Quaranta scatti a
colori e in bianco e nero in formato 16:9 ispirati dalla grande passione di
Albert Watson per il cinema” che spostano radicalmente l’attenzione dai
personaggi, alle storie stesse, rendendoli splendidi e formidabili attori di un
progetto molto più elaborato,c he tocca profondamente per la sua efficacia
narrativa.
E’ come se per una volta le Celebrities con la loro
popolarità abbiano perso qualcosa, per divenire interpreti di qualcosa di più
grande, in una magnifica rappresentazione cinematografica in cui emergono
aspetti reali della loro vera vita quotidiana.
Albert è salito sul palco del Gala e ha esordito con questa frase:
“Io sono il fotografo di questo calendario, se le
immagini vi sono piaciute sono contento, se le fotografie non vi sono piaciute
vi chiedo scusa per averle fatte”.
Da sole, solo queste parole, mostrano la sua grandezza e
la sua sensibilità che lo fanno uno dei più grandi Maestri della cultura
moderna.
